A total of 44 teams are set to take part in the first ever Berbice Cricket Board/Shimron Hetmyer Intermediate cricket tournament. The 50-overs knock out tournament is expected to get underway on February 3 across Berbice and will only feature players from that county.
According to Berbice Cricket Board President, Hilbert Foster a team will only be allowed four first division players, categorising the first division players as those who have played three 40-overs, 50-overs and Guyana Cricket Board Franchise matches in 2018-2019. First division players have also been extended to include under-19 players that represented the country.
Additionally, the teams will not be allowed more than two players of that category over the age of 23.
The tournament will see the likes of Gajanand Singh, Clinton Pestano, Veerasammy Permaul, Assad Fudadin, Devendra Bishoo and Hetmyer himself being debarred.
Powerhouse teams in Berbice such as Rose Hall Town Bakewell, Albion Community Centre, Port Mourant, Young Warriors, Blairmont Community Centre, Achievers, Tucber Park, Rose Hall Canje, Skeldon, Edinburgh and Mt. Sinai are all expected to be part of the Tournament
Foster hailed praises on Hetmyer for giving back to the county and urged him to continue being a positive role model to the thousands of youths in Berbice who look up to him for inspiration.
Hetmyer, the 18th male to play Test Cricket from Berbice stated that he was delighted to sponsor the tournament as he strongly believes in giving back. The Berbice Cricket Board, he stated was doing a great job at promoting the game and recalled playing a similar tournament during his early days at the Young Warriors Cricket Club.
