An alleged speeding driver is dead, while a woman who was travelling with him is now critically injured after they crashed into a city council truck parked along Princes Street, in Georgetown early yesterday morning.
Dead is Trevon Butters, also known as ‘Yankee,’ 35, a resident of Lot 238 Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt. The injured woman has been identified as Natasha Sobers, 25, of Wales, West Bank Demerara.
The accident occurred around 3.45am.
Butters reportedly died at the scene, while Sobers was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she remained a patient up to last evening. Her condition was listed as critical.
Stabroek News has learned that Butters and Sobers, who shared a relationship, were proceeding in his car, PNN 8969, west along the southern carriageway of Princes Street, Werk-en-Rust, allegedly at a fast rate of speed.
While in the vicinity of the city outpost, he reportedly lost control of the car and collided with the rear of the truck, GFF 9764 which was parked on the northern side of the road.
Butters was trapped in the car after the accident and he had to be removed by members of the Guyana Fire Service. Sobers, who was seated in the front
passenger seat, was pitched some distance away.
It remains unclear where they were heading at the time of the accident. However, it is suspected that Butters was intoxicated.
The truck, said to be owned by the Mayor and City Council, has been parked at the location for a long time.
When this newspaper visited the scene yesterday, residents recalled hearing a loud impact. Upon checking, they said they noticed the car had crashed into the truck. They said they rushed to assist the occupants but later learnt that Butters was already dead.
