Closing arguments were made by the prosecution and defence yesterday in the trial of Mark Royden Williams and Sherwin Nero, who are charged with murdering Cove and John resident Kumar Singh, called ‘Mango Man.’
Williams, called ‘Smallie’ and Nero, called ‘Catty,’ are charged with murdering Singh on August 30th, 2007, at Lot 51 Craig Milne, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara. A third man, Andrew Philander, called ‘Junior’ and ‘Gadget,’ was also arrested for the murder but he perished in a fire set by inmates at the Camp Street Prison in March of 2016.
Representing the accused is attorney Nigel Hughes, while the trial is being presided over by Justice James Bovell-Drakes.
Singh, of Lot 51 Craig Milne, Cove and John, was at home on August 30th, 2007, when four gunmen entered and started terrorising his family. Three other gunmen stood guard outside the gate.
The gunmen also shot at his nine family members during a 15-minute ordeal before escaping on foot towards the backdam. Singh sustained several gunshot wounds and died while undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Williams is one of two persons convicted and sentenced to death
for the February 17th, 2008 Bartica massacre in which 12 men were killed. A jury had found him guilty of seven of the 12 murders and guilty of manslaughter for the remainder. For the murders, he was read the death penalty and given life sentences on the lesser convictions.
