As Georgetown’s Mayor and City Council (M&CC) awaits a second legal opinion on the validity of its existing contracts with garbage collectors Puran Brothers Disposal Services Incorporated and Cevons Waste Management Incorporated, it has opted to continue to retain the services of five smaller companies until the end of this month.
In a statement issued last Thursday, the M&CC said at a statutory meeting on January 29th, councillors voted to extend the contracts with Garbage Eaters, Grandison, C&S Garbage Collectors, Trash Tech and Tristara until February 26th.
The statement further explained that the councillors are awaiting a second opinion from the Attorney General’s Chambers on the contracts with the two larger contractors.
Following the suspension of garbage collection services by Puran Brothers and Cevons, the M&CC had sought legal advice from its attorney, Roger Yearwood. On December 24th last year, Yearwood informed the then council that the two companies were in breach of their contracts after they chose to suspend their services.
The two companies withdrew their services from the municipality on November 26th after it failed to pay a total of $160 million for the work they have done since June.
However, the Ministry of Communities intervened to pay off the sum owed to the two companies by the end of last year.
That resulted in both companies signaling their readiness to return and provide their service to the city. However, they are currently operating in several wards under new arrangements that have limited their scope of work.
The council’s contracts with Cevons and Puran Brothers are to expire in 2020.
