Berbice marched to their sixth consecutive Guyana Cricket Board senior female Inter-County 50-overs title with an eight-wicket win over Demerara at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda yesterday.
Berbice seamer, Erva Giddings’ five-wicket haul helped rout Demerara for a humiliating 68 in 25.1 overs while a responsible knock from Sheneta Grimmond ensured the champions reached 69-2 in 13.3 overs.
Rain delayed the start of play but once the match got underway, Demerara looked solid at 16-0 when rain once again stopped play. Immediately after the stoppage, Lashana Toussaint belted Subrina Munroe down to the long on boundary to stamp her authority.
However in the next over, Giddings outfoxed the watchful Keisha Fraser with a slower ball that she popped back to the bowler and she then trapped Temica Wilson with her next delivery.
Giddings continued her dream run with the ball in her next over by splitting the stumps of Toussaint for 16.
She then trapped Kaysia Schultz leg before wicket and induced an edge from Haseena Mohammed’s bat for Mohammed to be caught by the wicket-keeper. Giddings eventually ended with 5-13 from her six overs to earn the Player-of-the-Match award.
Giddings was busy in the field as well, taking two catches, one of which dismissed Skipper, Akaze Thompson who looked settled but was plucked out of the sky at long on for a top score of 19 of off Sherika Campbelle.
Grimmond chipped in with her off-break bowling to capture two wickets including the wicket of Heema Singh who was caught by Mariam Samaroo running back from square leg for 12. The West Indies selectee ended with 2-4 from 2.1 overs.
Grimmond returned with the bat to lead her side over the line with an unbeaten 36, with two fours and a six that was pulled into the square leg pavilion. The 20-year-old was dropped at first slip when she was on three and again at mid-wicket when she was on 25.
The Berbice Cricket Board immediately dedicated the title to Nand Persaud, Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh and Brian Ramphal who assisted in the preparation of the women team.
