Former national cricketer Azeemul Haniff has been appointed junior coach of Everest Cricket Club effective this month.
Haniff, who represented Guyana for more than a decade, takes over from Latchman Yadram who became unavailable due to other commitments. The new coach, who took up the post Monday, is in charge of the development of the age group U15, U17 and U19 members as well as the female cricketers of the prestigious club.
With the experience of 51 First Class Matches and 13 List A matches under his belt, the left-handed former opening batsman, said he is looking forward to his new role.
“I was thinking about it for some time and I am glad that the executives of Everest reached out to me,” Haniff said.
The 41-year-old hit the ground running on Monday at the Camp Road based club and will be busy over the next few months preparing the various youth teams for competitions in April this year.
Haniff was a member of the winning Guyana Under-19 sides from 1995 to 1997 and graduated to the West Indies Under-19 team where he played alongside Ramnaresh Sarwan, Vishaul Nagamootoo, Nicholas DeGroot, Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Shirley Clarke and the late Runako Morton. He also represented the West Indies ‘A’ team before being selected to go the Champions Trophy in 2000 in Kenya but did not play a game.
After the 2007 Regional season, the Industry Village resident called time on his career at the age of 29 years old.
