A number of workers attached to the Qualfon call centre at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara have been laid off for the year thus far and more are expected to be let go in the coming days.
Several persons who were employed by the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) business have informed Stabroek News about the termination of their services by the company.
They said they were not given any notice or reason as to why they were laid off and learnt after their names appeared on a list of ‘terminated’ workers.
Stabroek News was reliably informed that the process started on January 14 this year when the first list of workers was released.
On that list were fourteen agents and eighteen staff members.
Among those laid off are persons with years of experience.
This newspaper visited the organization’s Goedverwagting location yesterday and asked to speak to a company official on the matter.
However the newspaper was told that the call centre had no comment to make. The interaction was done through the receptionist on duty.
Loss of a BPO contract is said to have been behind the layoffs.
