Georgetown defeated defending champions, West Demerara by nine wickets in the Demerara Cricket Board Inter-Association U15 50-overs first-round encounter at the Everest Cricket Club yesterday.
Rain reduced the contest to a 42-overs-a-side affair and Georgetown, sent West Demerara in to bat. The defending champions were bundled out for 64 in 24.2 overs.
In reply, Georgetown, required just 18.2 overs to reach 65-1.
The experienced bowling line up of Georgetown proved the difference in the contest with left arm seamer, Dillion Rampsaroop removing both openers to finish with 2-6.
His opening partner, Avinash Rajkumar (2-17) accounted for two of the middle order batsmen to leave West Demerara at 29-4.
When the spinners got into operation, Krsna Singh struck twice in successive overs to end with 3-17 while 11-year-old leg spinner, Riyad Latif was remarkable with his googly, returning 3-15.
Latif made light work of the tail including the wicket of number nine batsman, Arjune Rampaul who struck two boundaries during his top score of 11.
The chase was almost impeccable with openers, Jaden Campbell (27) and Romeo Deonarain (17 not out) sharing in a 56-run partnership.
Both batsmen were given chances with Campbell dropped on 27 at long on and Deonarin put down by the bowler on 10.
Winning captain, Alvin Mohabir said the match went according to plan since they intended to restrict their opponents to “around 60-70” with their batters capitalizing on the inexperienced bowling.
Mohabir explained that this was a good boost in confidence for the side and is hopeful the team could continue this form throughout the tournament.
