Junior national squash players Kirsten Gomes, Mohryan Baksh and Abosaide Cadogan highlighted the opening of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Annual Bounty Farm Handicap Tournament at the Georgetown Club Squash Court last evening.
Gomes (-4), who is one of the favourites to capture the category A title, defeated Louis DaSilva (7) in straight sets 15-13, 15-13 to collect a relatively easy season-opening win.
Baksh (-3), on the other hand, played in the opening match of the evening and worked his way past Kaden Pyenandy 15-14, 15-13. The latter had a plus-thirteen advantage.
Cadogan (-4), who had a tough handicap, easily disposed of Arvin Seelall (12) 15-(13), 15-(13) after completing her hockey duties while title contender Nicholas Verwey (-8) defeated Grant Fernandes (13) 15-(13), 15-(14) to complete an easy win.
There was also a win for Demetrius De Abreu (-4) who only dropped three points in his win over Aishani Persaud (11), 15-12, 15-11.
Dhiren Persaud, in a match where there was no handicap, came from a set down to defeat Teija Edwards 14-15, 15-14, 15-7 to move his way into the next round.
Gianni Carpenter (-6) was also in the winner’s row after defeating Abhinav Singh (14) 15-14, 4-15, 15-14. The tournament continues this evening where the Open category gets underway.
