A taxi driver was yesterday granted bail after being charged with causing the death of an 83-year-old pensioner.
It is alleged that Aaron Mahadeo, 33, on November 21, 2018, at Aubrey Barker Road, George-town, drove motor car HC 7451, in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Carlisle Clementson.
Mahadeo, of 3425 Stevedore Housing Scheme, denied the allegation.
According to facts presented by police prosecutor Visram Ramjattan, on the day in question, the defendant was going east along the northern side of the Aubrey Barker roadway at a fast rate, when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with the pedal cyclist, who was crossing the road from north to south. As a result of the collision, Clementson fell onto the roadway and suffered injuries. He was then picked up in a semiconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he succumbed on December 3, 2018.
Ramjattan objected to bail being granted given the seriousness of the offence, the penalty it attracts and the fact that a life was lost.
Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, however, granted the accused $350,000 bail and ordered that he report every Friday at 9 am to the East La Penitence Police Station.
The matter is expected to be called again on March 5.
