Guyana’s first Prime Minister and second President, L.F.S Burnham has been deceased for the past 34 years but his legacy continues to live on through various activities.
One such is cycling.
According to information reaching this daily, the annual Burnham Memorial Three-Stage Road Race will ride off tomorrow in the Ancient County.
The 48-mile first leg starts at 07:00hrs at Corriverton and will end in New Amsterdam.
This year’s series will continue next Sunday in the Mining Town from Linden to Georgetown. The gruelling second stage which rolls off at 07:00hrs also, will cover 65 miles.
On the same day at 14:00hrs, the third and final event (30 miles) commences at Georgetown, proceeds to Belfield on the East Coast of Demerara and back to the point of origin.
As customary, the race is sponsored by The Forbes Burnham Foundation and co-ordinated by the Flying Stars Cycling Club. Prizes and trophies will be up for grabs in the Open, Junior and Veteran categories respectively.
Last year’s senior winner was Paul DeNobrega while Adelie Hodge took top spot in the junior category with Paul Choo-Wee-Nam finishing first in the veterans division.
Note: Burnham was born on February 20, 1923 and passed away on August 6, 1985.
