Dear Editor,
We have read in the Stabroek News on February 16, 2018, that there was/is a massive Rupununi outreach by politicians from the APNU+AFC. According to Mr Joseph Harmon, who cannot even call himself “Candidate Harmon” these days because of constitutional reasons, some 28 villages in the Rupununi were visited. Why now?
Why were these careerist politicians not interested in the welfare of the people of the Rupununi before December 21, 2018? Why were such outreaches not done in 2016, 2017 and 2018? In those days, these careerist politicians preferred outreaches to international conferences in exotic locations overseas like the World Tamil Conference in India and the World Mercury Conference in Switzerland bringing back little return on the dollar for the Guyanese people. These people had no time for the Rupununian then, so why now?
Oh yes, we remember! A man name Charrandass Persaud, used his little ax to cut down those big trees and rendered them into political “stumps” today. But yet these stumps think they have enough political power to continue to abuse the Treasury. But such impropriety will redound to their dis-benefit and we have the history to prove this. During the 2015 campaign, did Team Ramotar not do the same thing and how did it turn out? Once there is no heart in the game from the politicians, the people will decipher the move and will act accordingly. Today, in the Rupununi, we are observing the same dishonourable actions from Team Granger and there is only one outcome. The people will take their goodies and then deal with them condignly at the ballot box. It was done before and it shall be done again.
Taxpayer funding of political campaigns is wrong for a fundamental reason: In a free society, people should not be forced to give their money to support political activity they would otherwise not support. It’s that simple. As Thomas Jefferson put it, “To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves, is sinful and tyrannical.”
This same Granger cabal especially the AFC folks heavily criticised the PPP/C before May 2015 for allegedly using taxpayer resources for political campaigns and now they have done even worse. What hypocrisy is this? It was not good for the goose then but it is good for the gander now? It was wrong on ethical and moral grounds then and it is today also.
But the Guyanese people are smart, they know these political careerists in the APNU+AFC are up to no good. They know these incompetents failed to deliver on their manifesto promises and are now trying to foist themselves on the people.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Asquith Rose and Sasenarine Singh
