Young Warriors Cricket Club booked their spot in the semifinals after defeating Rose Hall Canje by 15 runs in the Berbice Cricket Board/New Building Society 40-overs second-division tournament on Sunday at the Canje Welfare Ground.
Warriors won the toss and opted to bat on a slow track where they posted 209-9 in their allotted overs. They then dismissed the hosts for 194 in 37.3 overs.
Warriors were off to a blazing start with Alex Algoo and Ricardo Ramdial putting on 80 for the first wicket.
Algoo, however, was found short of his crease for 37 consisting of three sixes and Ramdial soon followed for 22 via stumping after he was given a life on 11.
Suresh Dhanai anchored the innings with an unbeaten 41 at number seven, laced with four sixes, three of which came off of Michael Campbell’s third over. The captain was supported by Mortimer Fraser (32) and Sanjay Khan (26).
Andrew Williams (2-17), Charran Singh (2-33) and Ameer Rahaman (2-36) were the principal wicket takers.
In reply, Campbell’s 64 spiked with three fours and three sixes was not enough to get his team over the line.
The opening batsman was supported by Adrian Haralsingh (23), the two sharing in a 52-run partnership for the second wicket.
Rahaman and Williams returned with the bat to aid their team’s effort with cameos of 33 and 23 respectively.
The batting was halted by Trevon Stanislaus who finished with 3-35 that allowed Khan to come in and made light work of the lower order and return figures of 3-31 along with Vishal Mohabir (2-16) and Dhanai (1-6).
Meanwhile, D’Edward Cricket Club defeated Blairmont Community Centre by seven wickets at Cotton Tree Ground.
D’Edward won the toss and inserted Blairmont to bat and they were restricted to 146 in 33.1 overs while D’Edward raced to 147-7 in 36 overs.
Blairmont’s batting was padded with a solid 57 from Nigel Deodat, containing five fours and three sixes as well as Javed Karim who supported with 40 and Goverdran Khan with 19.
Off-spinner, Devindra Lalsa returned 3-34 while left-arm spinner, Hemraj Harilall (2-18) and Eon Abdel’s 3-19 were the principal bowlers.
In the chase, D’Edward slipped to 2-2 in the third over after Deodat removed Altaf Khan and Shabeer Baksh pulled off a simple return catch to dismiss Keith Fraser. However, Lakeraj Sookra and Jaipaul Heeralall added 135 runs for the third wicket with Sookra top scoring with 70, hitting four fours and six sixes before his dismissal.
Heeralall steered his side across the line with an unbeaten 60. D’Edward will now face Bush Lot United in the Quarterfinals.
