Bail was yesterday denied for a man who was accused of robbing persons in a cemetery while they were painting the grave of a relative.
The armed robbery charges were read by Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The charge alleges that on February 17, at Cemetery Road, Georgetown, in the company of others, while being armed with a gun, Mano Walters robbed Derrick Austin of a gold chain valued $120,000, a gold band valued $25,000, a silver ring valued 8,000, a phone valued $17,000, a wallet valued $5,000 and $65,000 in cash.
Another charge alleged that on February 17, at Cemetery Road, Georgetown, he robbed Elton David of a phone valued $7,000 and $24,000 in cash.
It was further alleged that on the same date and at the same location, he robbed Desiree Austin of two gold rings valued $30,000, a phone valued $20,000 and a sim card valued $1,500.
Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail based on the nature of the crime and the fact that a dangerous weapon was used. He also said Walters was positively identified by the victims during an ID parade.
Blackman further explained that the complainants were at the cemetery painting the grave of a close relative when Walters, accompanied by others, approached them and held them at gun point, after which they were relieved of the articles mentioned.
Walters, who pleaded not guilty to all three charges, was subsequently remanded and is next scheduled to appear in court on March 6, 2019.
