Dear Editor,
Given the political environment in Guyana coupled with the dissemination of false information on social media, it is imperative that the daily newspapers be a source of independent and objective news. Your publication is governed by journalistic standards. As a paying subscriber to your publication, is expecting unbiased, accurate information too much to ask?
This recent sequence of reporting is very troubling:
Bold headline on February 21, 2019: “Solicitor General resigns”
Bold headline on February 22, 2019: “Solicitor General denies resignation report”
Buried in the last paragraph of the February 22, 2019 article, “Stabroek News regrets the error and apologises to Mr Hawke for any inconvenience caused by the report.” Seriously? Why not a headline recanting the story given the severe nature of the error and the impact on Mr. Hawke?
I urge the publisher and editor to adhere to journalistic standards. Your readers and paying subscribers deserve it. More importantly the nation deserves it! I don’t think I am asking for much.
Yours faithfully,
Gairy Moore
