Two men, who on January 25th were remanded to prison after pleading not guilty to stealing close to $400,000 in articles from a Stabroek Market vendor, were sentenced to prison yesterday after changing their pleas.
Wesley Ferdinand and Harry Bhawmie pleaded guilty to the charge when they appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly in Georgetown.
They initially pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was first read to them in January. Yesterday, however, they requested to change their pleas after saying that they had no one to assist them. The two previously told the court that they had no fixed place of abode.
The charge against Ferdinand and Bhawmie stated that on January 23rd, 2019, at the Stabroek Market wharf, they stole a quantity of underwear valued $346,000, and 30 slippers valued $45,000 from Monell Rogers.
Prosecutor Sanj Singh told the court that some of the items were recovered and were returned to Rogers.
Ferdinand and Bhawmie were subsequently sentenced to 18 months in jail.
