Following their seven-wicket defeat in three days to Guyana Jaguars, Barbados Pride’s captain, Shamarh Brooks believes that the young batsmen in the team did not perform well in the match.
Speaking exclusively to Stabroek Sport after the ninth round match of the Cricket West Indies Regional Championship at the Providence Stadium on Saturday, Brooks said: “Unfortunately a lot of our young players did not come up with the bat,” he said.
“It is a learning curve and is just for them to continue learning and learn as fast as possible on the job,” he added.
Brooks said that he felt the game was not a bad one for his team although they were left in shambles after being routed for 76 in the first innings.
“We came back decent in the second innings and we had a collapse this morning losing four wickets for 10 runs and I guess that was the demise for us.”
In Pride’s first innings only two batsmen managed double figures with number eight batsman, Chaim Holder top scoring with 22 but in the second innings, Shayne Moseley (64), Brooks (44) and Jonathan Carter (47) all got starts, however never carried on to a big total.
The 30-year-old Brooks credited his side for fighting back to limit the Jaguars to 201 in their first innings but was critical of them not capitalizing on tough chances.
“I think we had some missed chances going down in their first innings and it could have gone differently, you never know what could have happened and probably they not having a deficit of 125 could have made a difference in the game,” Brooks told Stabroek Sport.
Brooks singled out 21-year-old seamer, Shamar Springer who was up to the challenge, taking three wickets in an attempt to defend 113 but mentioned the crucial point of the match where Chandrapaul Hemraj, who went on to get a half century was bowled off a no ball when he was yet to get off the mark.
The deflated skipper stated that the team will now head to Jamaica where they will face home side, Scorpions in their final match of the season. There, he said, the team will most likely see the return of some senior players as the side looks to end the tournament on a high.
