KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Off-spinner Roston Chase’s five-wicket haul floored Jamaica Scorpions and left Barbados Pride with a modest victory target, in their 10th round match in the Regional Four-Day Championship here yesterday.
The Test star claimed five for 63 as the hosts collapsed from 138 for two to 218 all out in their second innings at Sabina Park.
Brandon King top-scored with 46, opener Garth Garvey got 37 and Test batsman Jermaine Blackwood, 31, but the hosts lost their last eight wickets for 80 runs, with fast bowler Keon Harding also claiming four for 80.
Set 158 for victory, Pride ended the day on five without loss, requiring a further 153 runs on today’s final day to win the contest.
The visitors had been earlier dismissed for 311 in their first innings after resuming the penultimate day on 233 for five.
Left-hander Jonathan Carter missed out on his second century of the season when he perished for 91 after resuming on 68, while wicketkeeper Tevyn Walcott hit 35 and Harding, 23.
Carter and Walcott, the latter of whom started the day on 16, extended their sixth wicket stand to 83 before they were finally separated, when Walcott was lbw to veteran left-arm spinner Nikita Miller.
Carter had faced 176 balls in just under four hours and counted 13 fours when he was bowled by rookie off-spinner Akim Frazer, with 10 runs added to the total at 284 for seven.
Fast bowler Derval Green (3-35) and left-arm spinner Nikita Miller (3-63) grabbed three wickets apiece for Scorpions.
Trailing by 61 on first innings, Scorpions lost Kennar Lewis cheaply for 11 with 28 runs on the board but King added 35 for the second wicket with Garvey before putting on 75 in a third wicket stand with Blackwood.
King struck four fours and three sixes in a 45-ball cameo while Blackwood also played with abandon in a 45-ball innings which included two fours and a six.
Chase broke the stand when he bowled Blackwood and two balls later, trapped former Test batsman Assad Fudadin lbw without scoring, as Scorpions lost four quick wickets for 21 runs.
