The nation’s best bikers will unchain their competitive juices today for the first time on the streets of Bartica for lucrative prizes when the inaugural Bartica Cycling Challenge takes place.
In excess $400,000 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs in the senior, junior, juvenile, female and masters categories.
Sponsored by the Trophy Stall of Bourda Market and the Bartica Town Council, Mayor Gifford Marshall recently expressed his excitement in anticipation of such a historic fixture.
Trophy Stall, which continues to exhibit its corporate and social responsibility in a tangible way, has agreed to be on board today’s inaugural event.
The meet in its own right is historic since it will be the first time in the nation’s history that racing cyclists from all across the 592 will compete in an event on the asphalt surfaces of Region 7.
Races for BMX riders in the 6-9 years, 9-12 years along with Open races for residents, will also form part of the day’s activities. Action is set to start at 10:00hrs and according to information, the town is already buzzing about the 45-lap main race. Top wheelsmen like Romello Crawford, Curtis Dey, Paul DeNobrega, Andre Green, Brighton John and Geron Williams will be among the bikers gunning for the top podium spot.
The overall winner, along with the top female and juvenile riders, will ride away with trophies. Mayor Marshall, passionate about the advancement of athletes across the sports spectrum in Bartica, recently expressed gratitude to Sunich for his support of the event.
“We are very pleased with your contribution to this event which as you know would be the first such race in Bartica. We are pulling out all the stops to ensure that the cyclists have a memorable time and fans are thrilled with the performances that we are told would be fantastic,” said Marshall. He also expressed appreciation to the Guyana Cycling Federation for approaching them to bring off the day of racing.
Sunich, in response, said that he had no hesitation in being a partner for the historical event which will see the cream of the nation’s cyclists from Berbice, Linden and the City matching pedals there for the first time.
“Like the cyclists who will be the main focus, we at Trophy Stall also want to be a part of this historical event. We have always been supportive of athletes in every sport and therefore we had no hesitation in coming on board,” said Sunich.
Britton, on behalf of the GCF expressed thanked Mayor Marshall, Bartica Town Council and Sunich for their collective efforts.
