The Guyana Conference of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Youth Ministries Department in association with the Adventist youths of Georgetown and other religious bodies present the ‘Pass It On’ Benefit Concert next Saturday night March 23, at the Ashton Alleyne Memorial Ground.
The artistes that will be performing include: Samuel Medas, Trizanna Atkins, Earl Bishop, Taianna Cox, The Messengers, Nickella Moses, Frank Hoppie and many others. Proceeds from the concert will go towards the development of the community centre ground.
Youth Ministries Director Marvyn Smith said, “Families will be able to access an area for recreation; it is a very important component of family development and sometimes we shun or overlook it. Everybody might not want to go all the way to the National Park. I believe that this ground, once organized, will help to combat a lot of social ills that we experience. Sports is a positive outlet. I, myself, grew up opposite a play field and I’m happy that my community afforded the opportunity for an outlet and now this is a perfect opportunity to collaborate to ensure that this is done for persons in the D’Urban Backlands Community.”
The concert is a spill off of the church’s worldwide annual Global Youth Day Initiative which is slated for today. For this venture, a number of projects have been undertaken. One such is a footpath off Kaikan Street in South Ruimveldt built by the members of the Moriah Seventh-day Adventist Church and members from within the community. The footpath is much needed as the walkway is often flooded. There is also a major blood drive slated for the Davis Memorial Hospital in Georgetown, Cumberland SDA Church in New Amsterdam and at the Linden/Georgetown Bus Park in Linden. The Union SDA church of West Coast Berbice will host a health exposition today as well.
An official ceremony for the handing over of the footpath in South Ruimveldt to the community will begin at 10:30 am at the site. All blood drives run from 9 am until 2 pm while the health exposition in West Coast, Berbice begins at 9 am.
In addition to this, the senior homes and the orphanages will be visited and there will be distributions of food hampers and literature.
“Very often people have the opinion that Seventh-day Adventists won’t do anything on the Sabbath, but this will be an illustration of the many things we would do on the Sabbath. We will take church out into the communities. It’s more of being the sermon than it is preaching it,” Smith said.
The community partners include – 210 Christian Gospel Assembly, Meadow Brook Gardens Church of the Nazarene and the AAMG Restoration Committee.
Tickets for the concert cost $1,000 for adults and $500 for children and can be purchased at the IADPA Book Store at the Guyana Conference of Seventh-day Adventists situated at 222 Peter Rose and Lance Gibbs Streets. Refreshments will be on sale.
The ground is situated opposite former mayor Hamilton Green’s residence. The benefit concert begins at 8 pm.
