A man who admitted to damaging articles belonging to his family, was sentenced to jail on Wednesday, after he told the court he had no money to pay a fine and no place to stay.
Naresh Rampersaud faced five charges when he appeared before the city court on Wednesday, one of which he denied.
Rampersaud denied the charge which alleged that on March 11, at Houston, Georgetown, he made use of threatening behaviour towards Nadine Rampersaud. He pleaded guilty to four other charges, however. Those charges alleged that on the aforementioned date and at the stated location, he made use of abusive language and threatening behaviour towards Kavita Rampersaud and he unlawfully and maliciously damaged a tablet, valued $15,000, and a window, valued $6,000; articles belonging to Kavita Rampersaud.
When asked by the magistrate why he damaged the articles, Rampersaud said, “Cause she damage nuff meh stuff them”.
The complainants told the magistrate that they no longer want him back at the house because his abusive behaviour is affecting his younger siblings.
The magistrate then asked if he had anywhere else to go and money to pay the fine, which she will have to impose on him due to his admitting to four of the charges.
Rampersaud said he had no money and no place to go since his family no longer wanted him.
He was then sentenced to six weeks in jail for each damage of property charge and seven days in jail for the use of abusive language and threatening behaviour charges.
Rampersaud was remanded to prison for the charge he denied, and the matter was transferred to another court.
