The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has extended condolences to the family of the late Bernard De Santos SC, who served as Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs of Guyana from 1992 to 1997.
“The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is mourning the recent passing of Mr Bernard De Santos”, a press statement from the party said on Thursday, while noting that De Santos became associated with the PPP in 1991, when he became a member of the then newly organised Civic component that the party had formed an alliance with.
It added that that the next year, when the PPP/C was elected to office on October 5, 1992, he was sworn in as Attorney General, Minister of Legal Affairs and a member of Cabinet.
“During his tenure he displayed exceptional legal skills in defending the Government both in court and in the Parliament, particularly in the myriad of agreements with external donors and financial institutions which was a common feature of the bankrupt, cash-strapped and highly indebted Guyana of that time. In 1996 his career was interrupted by an illness which compelled surgical intervention overseas… He later resumed duties until the General & Regional Elections in 1997, at which the PPP/C was re-elected and he opted to resume his private practice,” it added.
