Defending champions GBTI GCC retained their crown in the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) outdoor first-division league after completing a 5-0 win over Bingo GCC Spartans in the final round match.
The win was centered on strikes from Carina Moller who netted two goals while Gabriella Xavier, Shebiki Baptiste and Sandy Roopnarine recorded the others.
The female champs ended the league on 12 points and were undefeated in their title run.
Meanwhile, in the men’s division, defending champions Pepsi Hikers suffered a 2-3 loss to rivals Bounty GCC which could tilt the title the latter’s way.
Both teams headed in the match, the penultimate for both, undefeated with Hikers holding a one-point lead.
GCC at the half held a one-goal advantage courtesy of a strike from Mark Sargeant which came in the sixth minute.
GCC extended the lead in the 39thminute when Devin Hooper netted. One minute later, Andrew Stewart finally converted for Hikers but Alan Fernandes made it 3-1 for GCC to put his side comfortably ahead.
A late push from Hikers saw Aroydy Brandford converting minutes before the final whistle but time was not on the defending champion’s side for them to stage a comeback. GCC is now ahead by two points with a game in hand. They are now favourites to capture the title. Hikers also have a game in hand.
Meanwhile, in the other contest of the day, Supernova defeated Saints 8-2 while GCC Vintage down Old Fort 4-1. The league concludes today.
