A new and improved Nigel’s Supermarket is expected to be opened this weekend.
According to information received, the supermarket, which has new owners, will be opened under a new name, New Nigel’s Supermarket Inc.
The supermarket has been closed since January, which caused customers to question if it would be for good.
In 2016, then owner Nigel Johnson told Stabroek News that he would not be closing the supermarket as he was in it for the long haul. At that time, concerns were raised by customers about the appearance of the supermarket as shelves were barely stocked. According to Johnson, he was facing challenges stemming from creditors, which meant that he would have had to purchase less products in the supermarket. A few weeks after Johnson had mentioned a restructuring plan for the supermarket, it seemed poised for a turnaround just in time for the 2016 Christmas season. Shelves were restocked and even the meat and fish refrigerator that was previously removed was replaced and stocked.
According to a source, the New Nigel’s Supermarket is expected to be opened to the public on March 23rd after being closed and undergoing renovations since January.
Stabroek News was unable to contact Johnson for a comment on the sale of the supermarket.
