Two men were yesterday remanded to prison after they were charged in a city court with shooting at a pregnant woman and her teenage son.
Devon Gillis, and Andre Scott, both 26, were read two joint charges of discharging a loaded firearm.
The first charge alleges that on March 8th, at Campbell and Sussex streets, they discharged a loaded firearm at Anastasia Rodrigues, with intent to maim disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm.
It was further alleged that on the same date, they discharged a loaded firearm at Shane Gordon.
Both Gillis, of Albouystown, and Scott, of West Ruimveldt, denied the charges read to them by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Scott was read a third charge, which stated that on March 10th, at West La Penitence, in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Grace Bishop of $50,000 cash and 7 ½ pennyweight of raw gold, valued at $90,000.
He also pleaded not guilty to this offence.
Attorney Adrian Thompson, who represented both accused, requested that they be granted reasonable bail. He stated that Gillis was assaulted by police when they picked him up from his home and was vomiting and passing blood.
Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, however, objected to bail being granted based on the seriousness of the offences, the penalty they attract and the fact that guns were allegedly used.
He then stated that in relation to the discharging a loaded firearm matter, the defendants, in the company of another, went to the home of Rodrigues, around 8.30 pm, asking about her nephew. At the time, they were armed with firearms. Mansfield said the men discharged several rounds at Rodrigues, who is pregnant, and the 13-year-old boy. The prosecutor added that the juvenile was struck on his right hand, causing injuries.
After Mansfield’s address to the court, the two men were remanded to prison until April 8th, when the matters are to be called before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
