The Guyana Water Inc (GWI) has drilled new wells in four Region 9 communities to improve the quality and access of water for residents.
Wells have been drilled in Aishalton, Sand Creek, Kanuku and St. Ignatius, a release from GWI related. A total of 275 persons are said to be benefitting from this project.
GWI noted that Managing Director of GWI, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, visited some of the sites over the weekend to inspect the progress of works.
It was reported that the well drilled in Aishalton is to supplement the existing one drilled by the Brazilian army, to adequately satisfy the residents who are dispersed throughout the community. The release further stated that 1,580 metres of transmission mains and 2,100 metres of distribution pipelines were laid to connect 44 individual new service connections.
With regard to Sand Creek, the new well is said to be a collaborative effort between GWI and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO). It will be interconnected with the community’s existing well and a new connection will be run to the secondary school’s dormitory.
In Kanuku, the newly drilled well is intended to improve the water supply and water pressure to residents of Central Lethem. The release noted that the production at the previously existing well had decreased significantly, which had resulted in water from the Tabatinga well being redirected to supply residents of Central Lethem. This led to residents served by Tabatinga experiencing a reduced level of service and those served by Kanuku receiving reduced hours of service, the release said. With this new well, however, the water supply to residents served by Tabatinga will return to a state of normalcy.
Additionally, it was noted that the St. Ignatius well will enhance water production to serve residents situated in the eastern part of the community, who will also benefit from individual service connections.
