After losing two games on the trot, Guyana find themselves needing to win their third round clash in the Cricket West Indies Colonial Insurance Regional women’s Super50 against Leeward Islands today at the Enmore Community Centre ground.
Despite a century from their captain, Shemaine Campbelle, Guyana failed to defend 242 against Jamaica while in their first match, Trinidad and Tobago’s bowlers limited them to 150 in a chase of 222.
Speaking with this publication, Campbelle remained positive about her team’s chances in the competition, saying “you know cricket is all about a learning experience, we just got to stay focus and just go hard in the next game, taking nothing for granted.”
Campbelle has top scored twice with 111 and 45 against Jamaica and Trinidad but only Tremayne Smartt (58 against Jamaica) has managed a half century so far.
Sheneta Grimmond, Shabika Gajnabi and Cherry Ann Fraser have all had starts but gave it away in their 20s.
The captain has already called for the batting to step up and build on partnerships as well as capitalize on the running between the wickets.
The batting fell victim to spin on both occasions with Jamaica’s captain and off-spinner, Stafanie Taylor taking three wickets as well as Trinidad’s Anisa Mohammed who also took three wickets.
Campbelle also pointed out the need to show urgency in the field and be more aggressive, having missed crucial chances in both matches so far.
The bowling department has also struggled especially the spinners. Guyana has taken 11 wickets in total for both matches with left-arm seamer, Erva Giddings being the stand out with five.
Meanwhile, Leewards are languishing at the bottom of the table after being responsible for the two shortest matches so far in the tournament.
Leewards were bowled out for 76 against Trinidad with Shebani Bhaskar being the only double figure score while against Barbados, they were skittled out for 88 with Rozel Liburd who was batting at number 11 coming in and top scoring with 25.
In both contests where they were limited to under 100 runs, spin dominated with Barbados’ Hayley Matthews taking an astonishing 7-27 and Trinidad’s Karishma Ramharack (3-23) and Leandra Ramdeen (4-12).
