The changing of the name of the Guyana Police Force to the Guyana Police Service is only a proposal at this stage, according to Top Cop, Leslie James.
In a statement yesterday, James said “…contrary to what was recently reported in sections of the Press that the Guyana Police Force has been renamed, the Guyana Police Service, this is not so. It should be noted that the name change was proposed only at the meeting of the Police Reform Change Board (PRCB). Such name change will require, among other things, wider consultations and legislative amendments.”
In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of the Public Security has said “Finally, an important decision taken by the PRCB at its first meeting, was to agree that the name of the Guyana Police Force should be changed to the ‘Guyana Police Service’”.
There was no indication in the press release that this decision was only a proposal subject to wider consultations. This proposal had been on the agenda for a number of years.
In Thursday’s edition Stabroek News had reported the content of the Ministry of Public Security press release under the headline `It’s now the Guyana Police Service’.
