Two men were yesterday charged with trafficking 140.1 grammes of cannabis and while one admitted to the offence and was jailed for three years, his co-accused denied the charge and was remanded to prison.
The charge stated that on March 20th, 2019 at Owen Street, Kitty, Navindra Harrichan and Arthur Ishmael had in their possession 140.1 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Harrichan pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to three years in prison. However, Ishmael pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly, who read the joint charge to the men at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
When asked to explain, Harrichan told the court that he is a poor man and it was his first time being charged.
According to police prosecutor Sanj Singh, a search was conducted on the duo’s home and the cannabis was found in a wardrobe which was in the bedroom. He said Harrichan gave a statement to the police admitting to the offence.
Ishmael was remanded to prison and is to return to court on April 26th, 2019, for his next hearing.
