After registering their first win of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Colonial Medical Insurance Women’s Super50 competition, Guyana will come up against an undefeated Barbados today at the National Stadium in round four.
It is another do-or-die situation for the hosts, having lost their first two matches to Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
Barbados, on the other hand, have already disposed of the Leeward Islands, Jamaica and Windward Islands convincingly.
Guyana has shown promising results in the last match with Shabika Gajnabi stroking a half century as well as a solid top order partnership with Sheneta Grimmond while Mandy Mangru found form with the ball as well.
This is promising since the victory came at a time when their talismanic batter, Shemaine Campbelle, who scored the first century of the tournament was dismissed cheaply.
Assistant Coach of the Guyana unit, Ryan Hercules, credited the team’s ability to bounce back and perform solidly while pointing out that the unit is confident after winning their last match.
However, Hercules still felt the side has more work to do in the field as well as maintain consistency with their batting.
The Assistant Coach explained that Barbados is undoubtedly one of the toughest teams in the tournament and will not be “a walk in the park.”
He added that the hosts will have to come firing on all cylinders while sticking to the basics of the game and executing with precision. Meanwhile, the Barbados captain Hayley Matthews has won two player of the match awards, firstly for her seven-wicket haul bowling off-spin and for her 101-ball 108 two days ago where she also picked up two wickets.
Matthews had also blasted 91 and took two wickets against the Windwards but in that same match, Deandra Dottin missed out on a century, left unbeaten on 94 from 50 balls. Dottin is yet to be dismissed in the tournament after making 23 not out and 34 not out against the Windwards and the Leewards respectively.
Also, Kaycia Knight has been consistent 59 not out, two not out and 81 so far, thus forming an imposing top order.
