Pepsi Sonics upset Ravens in the first division while Eagles soared past Pacesetters in the second division when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association [GABA]/’Lets Bet Sports’ championship continued on Sunday.
The Mandela Avenue based Pepsi Sonics squeaked past Ravens 50-48. Jason Squires and Aubrey Austin top scored in the wins with 12 points each.
They were assisted by Ryan Melville, Earl O’Neil and Junior Lovell, scorers of eight, seven and six points respectively.
For the loser, Tyrone Hamid amassed a game-high 28 points. No other player recorded a double figure score with the next best scorer with six points being Sebastian Luke.
The eventual low-scoring affair started brightly for Sonics who took a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The roles would be reversed in the second quarter as Ravens outscored Sonics 14-6 to secure a marginal 20-19 advantage heading into the halftime interval.
Ravens extended their lead in the third quarter, netting 16 points while restricting Sonics to 11 points to enter the final quarter ahead at 36-30.
However, Sonics would secure the come-from-behind result in dramatic fashion, outhustling Ravens by a 20-12 margin. Meanwhile, Eagles prevailed over Pacesetters 62-51 to clinch their appearance in the final of the section. They will now oppose Plaisance Guardians in the final.
Shamar Huntley led the win with 14 points, while Sherland Gillis and Kwesi Thompson assisted with 11 points respectively.
Devon Murray scored eight points while Ruel McLennon and Lyndon Wilson each netted seven points.
On the other side, Troy David top scored with 16 points, with George Yearwood adding 13 points. Contributing eight and seven points each were Zion Gray and Roger John.
Trailing 20-11 at the end of the first period, Eagles flew into the lead at the conclusion of the second quarter at 27-24, after outscoring Pacesetters 16-4.
Pacesetters responded in the third quarter, tallying 18 points to Eagles 13 points to lead 42-40 heading into the final quarter.
However, a fourth quarter offensive blitz ensured Eagles earned their place in the final as they out-shot Pacesetters 20-9.
