The town of Mabaruma, Region One, will be focusing on developing its main ports, the Mabaruma airstrip and the Kumaka waterfront, to boost its tourism sector.
This was related by the Town Council’s Superintendent of Works, Egbert Dubra, who spoke with the Department of Public Information (DPI).
Dubra told DPI that the council understands the need for tourism and has been working with residents through sensitisation exercises to develop the sector. Furthermore, he noted that they will be hosting town hall meetings more frequently to enlighten residents on the responsibilities that come with attaining township status.
It was noted that Mabaruma was among the four new towns declared by President David Granger in 2016. It was stated that the town has been making significant strides toward development, particularly through its Mayor and Town Council.
The release reported that the council received an $18 million subvention through which all works will continue. It was noted that the council is currently carrying out road works to develop a farm-to-market road, along with a number of other programmes facilitated by the Ministry of Communities.
Dubra told DPI that council intends to utilise funding across the constituencies to address whatever issues arise. “Where there is the need for water, we will be there. Where there is the need for better roads, we will assist with that. Where there is the need for recreation, we will try to improve on that. We will help the people in all six constituencies,” he said.
