Jamaica remains on flu alert

(Jamaica Observer) The Ministry of Health yesterday reminded the public that the country was still on the influenza alert status announced by Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton in Parliament in February.

Guyana finish second overall at senior C/bean C/ships

Hosts Guyana emerged runners up at the conclusion of the 61st Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) senior championships which ended at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) last evening with Shemar Britton and Treance Lowe each copping bronze medals.   Guyana brought the curtains down on the championships with a total of 750 points behind eventual champions the Dominican Republic (1530) and ahead of third place Barbados (640).  The final day, however, saw Britton following up his Under – 21 silver medal with bronze in the men’s singles after he was stopped in the semi-finals by Hector Berrios of Puerto Rico 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 10-12.   Berrios was eventually defeated by Emile Santos in the final 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, 12-10.   Lowe also exited the championships at the semi-final stage after she went down to Esmerlyn Castro of the Dominica Republic 9-11, 6-11, 6-11, 7-11.

Police run out of `ammo’ in semifinal loss to Everest 

Police Sports Club (PSC), in sorry batting display, surrendered to Everest by 56 runs in the first semifinal of New Building Society second division forty overs tournament at the Demerara Cricket Club last evening under lights.  Police chasing 239 for victory and a place in the final, began their reply like a house on fire, racing to 111 without loss at the end of the 10th over.   Fireworks came off the bat of Andrew Lyght Jr who swatted nine huge sixes and a four in a savage knock of 72.

DCC hammers MSC by 216 runs to set up final against GCC

The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) yesterday showcased their might against hosts Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) in the second semi-final of the Noble House Seafoods Under – 19 Generation Next Cricket Competition, defeating them by 216 runs to set up a finale against the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC)   DCC, after winning the toss and electing to bat, posted a mammoth 331 for eight from their fifty overs on the back of half-centuries from national youth players Alphius Bookie, Sachin Singh and skipper Ashmead Nedd.

Minister of Citizenship, Winston Felix, says that a lack of electricity is largely to blame for the delay in the commencement of operations at the newly built passport and immigration offices at New Amsterdam and Linden.  “Well we don’t have power…in Berbice we’re waiting for them [GPL] to tell us how much money we have to pay for the connections.

Australia bowlers deny report of Warner rift

MELBOURNE,  (Reuters) – Australia’s four frontline bowlers, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, have denied a media report they were prepared to boycott last year’s fourth test against South Africa if David Warner was picked for the match.

Word games with the constitution

Dear Editor, Let’s play a game; I did not invent it but the parameters and rules have been set by Guyana’s Court of Appeal (2-1), in this game players add a single word  to an Article of the Constitution then make an argument that this is what the framers intended; it seems a simple and innocuous enough premise and should the recent addition of ‘Absolute’ be upheld by the Caribbean Court of Justice, we can expect decades of fun and fees for the legal luminaries in the jurisdictions that subscribe to that court.

Walkovers highlight opening night of Futsal c/ships

On night highlighted by three walkovers, Sparta Boss, Future Stars, Leopold Street and Bent Street secured easy wins, when the Stag Beer Easter Cup Futsal Championship started on Saturday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.  Sparta Boss dismissed Kingston 6-1.

GECOM Chairman’s vote against Vishnu Persaud

On February 6th, 2019, a subcommittee of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) completed a report into a complaint that had been lodged with it by the three Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) opposition-nominated commissioners that employment practices have been biased and also that Deputy Chief Election Officer (DCEO) Roxanne Myers had been unfairly selected over the former holder of that position Vishnu Persaud by virtue of the vote of the Chairman, Justice (Rtd) James Patterson.
