The body of a West Coast Berbice pensioner was found on fire last evening in her backyard.
The pensioner was identified as Bhagwandai Deonarine of Washington Village.
Residents of the village last evening said that the woman did not have any neighbour in close proximity to her house and as such no one heard anything.
Stabroek News was told that a young female would spend the evenings with the woman so as to keep her company since she lived alone.
However, upon arriving at the house last evening and calling there was no answer. The young lady then contacted another resident who told her that they did not see the pensioner for the entire day.
Upon entering the yard, the body of the woman was seen on fire at the back of her house. Sources last evening said that her upper body had suffered serious burn injuries while apparent marks of violence were also noticed.
An investigation has been launched.
According to residents, the pensioner was robbed previously by a known thief in the village. She had reportedly positively identified the perpetrator during the police’s investigation and appeared several times in court to give evidence. According to residents, the man was released from prison about one week ago.
