Capital FC and Blueberry Hill secured opening night wins on Sunday in the inaugural Linden Mayor’s Cup Knockout Football Championships at the Mackenzie Sports Club [MSC] ground, Linden.
Capital FC defeated Amelia’s Ward Panthers by a 2-0 score-line. Jonny Waldron opened the scoring for Capital FC as he found the back of the net in the 32nd minute.
Latching onto a through pass which emanated from the right flank, Waldron uncorked a powerful effort from inside the right of the six-yard area past the opposing custodian.
Capital FC’s lead would remain intact heading into the halftime interval. Andre Mayers would then double their lead in the 70th minute.
It was a brilliant individual effort from the emerging star as he dribbled his marker inside the area before slotting the ball beyond the advancing goalkeeper into the far corner.
Meanwhile, Blueberry Hill recorded an identical victory over High-Stars. Following a scoreless first half interval, Roydell Archer broke the deadlock in the 61st minute.
The aforesaid conversion started from a Mark Andrews pass and Archer tucked his effort into the back of the net from inside the penalty box.
The contest was then put to bed 15 minutes onward, as Wayne Wilson curled a 35 yard free-kick past the opposing custodian.
The event continues on Friday with another doubleheader at the same venue.
The opening match will pit Coomacka against Silver Bullets from 19:00hrs, with Topp XX slated to match skills with Milerock-B at 21:00hrs.
