The second quarter of the cycling season rides off on Sunday in Linden with the staging of the eighth annual Baker’s Memorial Cycling Classic.
In what is gearing up to be a scorcher on the asphalt of the mining town, the nation’s top wheelsmen will unchain their competitive juices for lucrative cash prizes and trophies in the feature 60-mile road race. Sponsored by The Baker Family & Friends and Clear Water Guyana Inc, Sunday’s event is scheduled to get underway at 08:00hrs.
The in-form Romello Crawford, along with Linden Bauxite Flyer’s standouts, Michael Anthony and Rastaff O’Selmo, as well as Geron Williams, Paul DeNobrega, Curtis Dey, Alanzo Ambrose, Andrew Hicks, Deeraj Garbarran, Walter Grant-Stuart, Balram Narine and Christopher Griffith, will be the ones to watch.
Paul Choo-We-Nam won the veteran’s segment of last year’s race while Briton John did so for the juniors with Shenika Teixeira the top female. John has since graduated to the senior ranks and he too will be gunning for the top podium spot.
Hamza Eastman, currently campaigning on the US circuit, won last year’s senior category.
There will also be races for the BMX and Mountain Bikers.
