Sixteen police youth groups yesterday participated in various activities at a Career Day fair hosted by the Guyana Police Force.
At least 1,000 youths from the youth groups of the ‘A’ Division were present at the event, which was held at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
The fair started off with a variety of performances, which included skits, dances and recitals, done by the youths from the various youth groups. Each child was attired in clothing representing the profession they intend on pursuing in the future. One child, who was dressed as a farmer, told this newspaper that her father, who is a farmer, is a great inspiration to her, hence her choice of attire.
However, she noted that she intends on becoming a soldier when she grows up. She also mentioned that this was her first time at a career day and that she was very eager to participate in the event so she can gain knowledge on various topics.
Another child, from the Alberttown Police Youth Group, said that she recently finished secondary school and has high hopes of becoming a nurse but due to her family’s financial situation, she has had a bit of a setback. “However, I am here to learn what I can and I’m glad to be a part of this event,” she added.
The group’s supervisors, with the youths in tow, visited each booth, where they were given brochures and lectured on various topics.
The agencies which participated and engaged the youths included: Courts Optical, ER Burrowes School of Art, CARICOM, the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Fire Service, Qualfon, Government Technical Institute, Carnegie School of Home Economics, Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, Ministry of Public Health, City Constabulary and the Childcare and Protection Agency.
