Capital FC upset Botofago while Eagles United downed Topp XX in the quarterfinal round on Sunday in the inaugural Linden Mayors Cup Knockout Football championships.
The Mackenzie Sports Club [MSC] ground, Linden, was the venue for the unlikely result, as Capital FC overcame Botofago on sudden death penalty kicks.
The aforementioned method, which the ended 5-5 at the end of the first round, was required after full time ended 2-2. The inexperienced Capital FC unit eventually prevailed 6-5, after converting from the spot, while Botofago failed from the distance.
Prior to the dramatic conclusion, Jamal Haynes handed Botofago the lead compliments of a 20th minute conversion. However, the lead proved to be short-lived, as Dequan Hercules equalised six minutes onward.
This score would remain unchanged for the remainder of the normal time interval, sending the match into the extra time when Andre Mayers made his presence felt for Capital FC, handing his side the lead in the 93rd minute.
The match would traverse to its eventual conclusion after Antoine Gill levelled proceedings in the 104th minute.
Meanwhile, Eagles soared past Topp XX 4-2. Burly forward Donovan Francis led the way with a double with his first coming in the sixth minute to give his side the early lead.
Topp XX responded in the 17th minute when Abram Browne converted. However, Kellon Primo restored Eagles’ one-goal advantage, etching his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 28th minute.
Francis would secure his second of the night to make it 3-1, slotting into the back of the net in the 48th minute. The lead would then grow to 4-1 in the 58th minute through a Colwyn Drakes effort, effectively ending the contest.
Travis Watterton recorded a consolation goal for Topp XX in the 78th minute. The 12 team tournament is being hosted as part of region’s annual Linden Town Week celebration, continues on Sunday at the same venue with the second round of quarterfinal matches.
In the opening match, Net-Rockers will oppose Blueberry Hill at 19:00hrs, with Winners Connection battling Silver Shattas from 21:00hrs.
