A century from West Indies under – 16 batsman Mavendra Dindyal underlined  a 44-run win for the national Select Uunder – 15 side over Essequibo in the opening round of the Rubis Bel Air Under-17 Inter County tournament at Enmore yesterday.

Dindyal who is a right-handed stroke maker by trade, carved out an innings of 104 to see his side to 188-7 from their allotted fifty overs.

He got support from Alvin Mohabir (29) and Zachary Jodah (13) as Essequibo’s skipper Sheldon Charles snared 2-19 to end as the pick of the bowlers while Ryan Atkinson (2-29) also chipped in with two scalps.

Essequibo in their reply was skittled out for 144 inside 43 overs with Charles returning with the bat to stroke a half century – 52- to record a fine all-round showing.

However, his efforts were thwarted by Krsna Singh who collected 4-26 to bowl his side to the opening triumph while Mohabir who chipped in with the bat earlier, returned to grab 3-13 to support Singh’s efforts.

Round two bowls off today with Demerara who defeated Berbice by nine wickets facing Essequibo at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) while Berbice will come up against the national select under- 15’s at the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) ground. Both matches bowl off from 9:30hrs.
