Yet another GECOM meeting was aborted yesterday after opposition-nominated commissioners objected again to the insistence by the majority on the pursuit of house-to-house (HTH) registration.
Vincent Alexander, a government-nominated member of Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has meanwhile accused his colleague Robeson Benn of “making a joke of the constitution”.
“It’s a joke. We are reducing our politics to jokes now… We are making a joke of the constitution,” he told reporters when asked about legal threats Benn has made against the GECOM secretariat.
Last week Benn through his lawyer Anil Nandlall threatened Chief Election Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield with legal action.
“I respectfully demand that you refrain from embarking on, or proceeding with, this unlawful and unconstitutional exercise, which will disenfranchise thousands of persons now qualified to vote. If I do not hear from you within seven days of the date hereof, I will assume that you have rejected my demand and I will have no alternative but to advise my client to institute legal proceedings against you, to restrain you from embarking on, or proceeding with, the aforesaid house-to-house registration,” a letter sent to Lowenfield by Benn’s lawyer Anil Nandlall read.
