Thirty women drawn from various communities across Region Six, East Berbice, Corentyne, last week benefitted from a one-day leadership training hosted by the Ministry of Social Protection’s Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute (GWLI).
Held under the theme, “Enhancing Capabilities and Increasing Choices”, the participants were exposed to training on topics including self-esteem, effective communication and leadership.
A press release from the ministry opined that as a result of the course, which facilitated women both working and heading single parent households, participants are now equipped to take up leadership roles and become excellent leaders.
It stated that the main objective of the training was to “inform and teach women that leadership is not a one-step, but it includes improving oneself, enhancing self-esteem, developing communication level, professionalism and possession of good character”.
The release noted that Regional Executive Officer of Region Six, Kim Williams-Stephen, during the opening ceremony, explained to participants that professionalism is critical for performance and good leadership and urged them to make the most of the opportunity for their own personal development.
“We are all different and must develop our own unique strength and skills. We don’t want to be men but want equal rights and opportunity. In the past it was the opinion of people that women’s place is in the home but today that has changed. I implore you to ask questions, be alert and open to learn. I challenge you to make the most of this opportunity. Stronger communities mean stronger regions and ultimately stronger countries,” Williams-Stephen related.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the GWLI, Mavis Benn, emphasized to the participants that self-development is only possible once an individual identifies his or her weaknesses, and as such, she urged them to practice introspection.
“This allows you an opportunity to know yourself, understand who you are, believe in yourself and discover the hidden potentials. Self-introspection is not a one day something but must be done overtime. You have to practice basic ethics wherever you are, and build your self-esteem continuously. You must also discipline yourself and your mind. If you are to be a good leader, you must be able to control your mind from the negativity,” she told the women.
DPI reported that presentations were also made by Dr. Astell Collins, who delivered remarks on preparing for successful leadership, and Myrna Lee who dealt with effective communication.
Mayor of New Amsterdam, Winifred Heywood, Member of Parliament, Barbara Pilgrim and Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Protection, Adrian Ramrattan also attended the event.
