All-rounder Jonathan Rampersaud yesterday displayed his usefulness with both bat and ball to lead Berbice past the national Select U15 side by 149 runs in second round action of the Rubis Bel Air Under-17 Inter County tournament at the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) ground.
National under-15 player Rampersaud, recorded an unbeaten knock of 41 and later returned with the ball to nab 4-17 to rout his junior counterparts.
Berbice, hammered in their opening encounter against Demerara, batted first and posted 254-7 from their allotted 50 overs.
They were cruising along at 123-3 on the back of solid top-order contributions from Ricardo Ramdehol (42) and Zeynul Ramsammy (26) before off-spinner Alvin Mohabir (4-45) snared four middle order scalps to stem the flow of runs. Berbice were reduced to 167 – 7.
It was from that juncture that Rampersaud started to make his mark as he shared in an unbroken 87-run ninth wicket partnership with Sarwan Chaitnarine (58) as the duo held the innings together and later injected momentum to see Berbice to 254-7 from 50 overs. They combined to hit 10 fours, eight of which came off Chaitnarine’s blade and two sixes.
The Select U15 side in response, were skittled out for 105 in the 41stover as only Rampertab Ramnauth (23) and Ravishkar Sobhai (22) recorded scores of 20 or more.
Rampersaud led the rout with figures of 4-17 from 8.1 overs. Gaurav Ramesh (2-23) and Marvan Prashad (2-13) claimed two wickets each to lend support.
The tournament concludes today with Berbice taking on Essequibo at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground while the under – 15s will face Demerara at Everest.
