A 28-year-old labourer, who is accused of fatally stabbing his co-worker during a drinking spree near the mouth of the Pomeroon River on Saturday morning, was yesterday remanded to prison, after being arraigned on a murder charge.
The charge was read to Michael Culpepper, called “Mickey”, a resident of Grant Melville, Lower Pomeroon, by Magistrate Esther Sam, at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
Culpepper was not required to plead to the capital offence and was remanded to prison.
The matter was adjourned to May 5, when it will be called again at the Charity Magistrate’s Court.
Michael Chu, called ‘Chu Man,’ 48, of Charity Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed several times about his body around midday, Saturday.
He was rushed to the Charity Hospital by a Coast Guard officer who was in the vicinity at the time, and was later transferred to Suddie Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries about 5.58 pm.
The police had said enquiries revealed that Chu and Culpepper, who worked together on a farm at Glen Nors in the Lower Pomeroon River, were drinking together when they got into a heated argument.
Culpepper then allegedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed Chu.
