A vendor accused of chopping a police officer about her body during a fight over her child’s father, was yesterday remanded to prison.
Revelana Smith, of 88 William Street, Kitty, was read the attempted murder charge by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The charge alleges that Smith, on March 26, at Pike Street, Kitty, wounded Renetta Bharrat with the intent to commit murder.
Smith was not required to enter a plea to the indictable offence.
Police prosecutor Neville Jeffers, objected to the accused being granted bail, highlighting the seriousness of the crime and the fact that since the crime occurred, the defendant has gone into hiding.
Jeffers added that on April 9, police acting on information, went to a location in Sophia, where they apprehended the defendant.
The court heard that on the day in question, the complainant received a call and went to meet her boyfriend in Kitty. Upon her arrival in Kitty, the defendant exited a car with a cutlass and began to chop Bharrat about her body. Public-spirited persons rescued the complainant and rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was treated and admitted a patient, then discharged sometime after.
Smith fled the area after the incident.
Representing the accused, was attorney Adrian Thompson, who stated that there was a fight between the two women and that the only reason his client was charged is because the complainant is a policewoman. He then made an application for reasonable bail.
This request was later denied by the Chief Magistrate and Smith was remanded to prison.
The matter was then adjourned until April 24.
