Defending champions, Uprising, Beterverwagting [BV]-A, Melanie-B, Buxton Diamond and Paradise-A reached the group round when the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ East Coast Demerara Championship commenced on Friday.
Witnessed by the a mammoth crowd at the Haslington Market Tarmac, tournament and crowd favourite Uprising sent a stern warning to the rest of the field, defeating Non-Pariel 2-0.
It was an imperious performance from the youthful outfit which secured the result compliments of a double from Shamar Scott which sent the crowd into a frenzy.
The substitute forward opened the scoring in the eighth minute before making his presence felt once more in the 15th minute to highlight his team’s potential of retaining the championship.
Similarly, Paradise dismantled Victoria Eagles 3-0. Quincy Adams opened the scoring in the seventh minute, before Tyreek Cummings recorded a ‘Guinness Goal’ [GG], (a goal scored in the final three minutes of normal time counts as two) in the 18th minute.
Meanwhile, BV-A downed Plaisance-B 1-0. Delroy Dean scored in the 16th minute. Likewise Melanie-B disconnected GWI East Coast 1-0 compliments of a Ryan Seales 12th minute conversion.
Also, Buxton Diamond edged Haslington Hypers 1-0 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended scoreless. Below features the complete results for the matches staged. The grand finale is slated for Monday April 22nd.
Winner of the event will pocket $400,000 and the winner’s trophy. They will also earn an automatic berth to the Guinness National Championship while the runners-up will pocket $150,000 and the corresponding accolade, with the third and fourth place finisher receiving $100,000 and $75,000 respectively. Up to press time, the group stage matches were underway.
