Rampertab Ramnauth showed his class with a century that led Guyana to a six-wicket victory over Jamaica in the first round of the Cricket West Indies Regional Under-15 tournament yesterday in Antigua.
Guyana won the toss and sent Jamaica in to bat at Ball Beef Liberta and they managed 243-8 from their allotted overs.
In reply, Guyana reached 244-4 in 45.4 overs.
Ramnauth’s 134-ball 114 consisted of 14 boundaries and he shared in an opening stand of 128 with Jaden Campbell who made 47 from 45 balls with four boundaries.
The Berbice batsman was then joined by Mavindra Dindyal who followed up his 2-34 with a 60-ball 42, hitting three fours along the way.
Dindyal and Ramnauth shared in a 76-run partnership for the third wicket.
Tameshwar Mahadeo then saw his team over the line with an unbeaten 18 after Ramnauth was caught by Jordon Johnson off of Damar Freeburn in the 41st over.
Earlei, the Guyana bowlers kept the Jamaican batsmen in line with left-arm spinner and captain, Zachary Jodah breaking a 51-run opening stand forcing Kev’Aundre Virgo to hold out to Thaddeous Lovell for 10 while off-spinner, Ksna Singh (2-38) accounted for his partner, Adrian Weir (26) seven runs later.
Jodah got into his groove and ripped through the middle order to finish with 3-46 as Jamaica slipped to 74-5.
However, Jamaica’s lower order showed their grit with a stubborn display as Marlon Williams (12) and Odel Samuels (16) provided stable cameos before respectively being caught and bowled and trapped leg before wicket by Dindyal.
Reon Edwards also got among the runs with a 46-ball 15 while an unbroken partnership of 89 for the eighth wicket between T. Redwood (07 not out) and Steven Wedderburn (74 not out) pushed Jamaica over 200.
Wedderburn’s 93-ball innings comprised seven fours and one six as he shifted gear in the back end of Jamaica’s innings.
Guyana will play title-holders Barbados today. The defending Super50 Cup champs suffered an early blow to their title defence when they crashed to a 68-run defeat to archrivals Trinidad and Tobago, a Caribbean Media Corporation report stated.
Asked to chase 216 at All Saints, Barbados were bundled out for 147 in the 43rd over with Nickyle Jalim (2-26) and Joshua Davis (2-31) finishing with two wickets apiece.
Opener Micaiah Simmons top-scored with 42, posting 47 for the second wicket with Joshua Morris (25) but once the partnership was broken, the Barbados innings fell apart.
Justin Jagessar had earlier carved out 55 as T&T chalked up 215 for nine off their 50 overs, after they were sent in.
With T&T struggling on 78 for four in the 24th, Jagessar anchored a 63-run fifth wicket stand with Kyle Ramdoo (22) to repair the innings.
Nathan Sealy finished with four for 33.
In the other game played at Coolidge Cricket Ground, Windward Islands chased down a paltry 83 to beat Leeward Islands by eight wickets.
