The Region Two administration has completed $6 million worth of rehabilitative works on the Lot 5 Farmer’s Access Road at Devonshire Castle on the Essequibo Coast, a 1,500 metre road upgrade expected to improve the livelihoods of 100 farmers.
A release from the Department of Public Information (DPI) related that the entirety of the roadway spans 10,000 metres and separates two trenches and their adjacent rice farms.
The recent works, apart from transforming the road from its once “disastrous state”, have enabled the construction of several cross-dam links to facilitate farmer’s access.
“What we would have done this year is to upgrade this road from a complete mud road, to a crusher run road,” Regional Executive Officer (REO), Denis Jaikaran told DPI.
The entity reported that farmers from Devonshire Castle and Hampton Court will be the main beneficiaries of the enhanced road.
The upgrade to this section of road, completed under Region Two’s 2019 Agriculture Drainage and Irrigation Roads programme, is one of several projects recently undertaken by the administration, and is the first phase of the road project.
The second phase, which is expected to be carried out next year, will see another 5,000 metres of the road undergoing works to “create access that is good for the farmers,” Jaikaran said.
He also stated that there are plans to improve the full length of the road.
