A 20-year-old construction worker is now dead, and several others were injured, following an early morning accident along the Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), yesterday.
Dead is Mahendra Deokie, called ‘Ryan’, a resident of Soesdyke, EBD.
Those injured have been identified as Nicholas Morrison, 24, Amerita Mohanlall, called “Sasha” and Emily Persaud, all of Lot 14 Soesdyke, EBD.
At the time of the accident, which occurred around 4.30am, the trio were occupants of motor car PPP 972, driven by Deokie.
The drivers of the two other vehicles— a jeep, PKK 1555 and minibus BWW 5216— Travis Henry and Outar Roopnarine, also sustained injuries about their bodies.
They were all rushed by public-spirited citizens to the Diamond Hospital, where Deokie succumbed while receiving medical attention. Morrison was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where his condition is listed as critical.
Henry, of Howes Street, Charlestown and Roopnarine, 68, of Herstelling, EBD, were treated and sent away. The police said they both passed breathalyser tests and are assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, Mohanlall and Persaud remain warded at the Diamond Hospital. Their conditions are listed as stable.
Investigations, the police said, revealed that the jeep and minibus were proceeding north along the western carriageway of the road, while Deokie was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway, reportedly at a fast rate.
Deokie reportedly lost control of the motor car, which veered onto the western lane, collided with the jeep’s right rear wheel and then into the front of the minibus.
At the time of the accident, Deokie and the occupants of his car were reportedly returning home after an evening outing.
Deokie’s body is presently at Lykens’s Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
