Dear Editor,
The Sunday Stabroek of April 14, 2019 in an article by Laurel Sutherland, reported that Guyanese writer Kevin Garbaran is on the shortlist for the 2019 Commonwealth Short Story Prize.
This is indeed good news, but Sutherland states that this is only the second occasion on which a Guyanese writer has achieved this.
I believe this omits a name, as in 2000, Guyanese Dennis Nichols won the Prize, for his story called “The Release”. Coincidentally, this story too had “Ol’ Higue” as its theme, in recounting the anxieties of a young man about to recite and perform the Wordsworth McAndrew poem. The story ends with the reciter’s recognition of McAndrew himself smiling in approval.
Yours faithfully,
J. Roback
