Guyanese quartet Ashmead Nedd, Sachin Singh, Kevlon Anderson and Kelvin Umrao will depart Guyana on Thursday for their second West Indies Under – 19 Development Camp in Antigua.
The youngsters, who form part of Guyana’s most talented bunch of junior players, will go through their paces under the watchful eyes of West Indies youth coach, Graeme West.
The two-week encampment is part of Cricket West Indies development agenda ahead of the 2020 International Cricket Council (ICC) Under – 19 World Cup which is scheduled to be played in South Africa.
All four Guyanese had also attended the previous camp during December last and gained the call ups on the back of strong performances in the 2018 Regional Under – 19 tournament; they are eligible for selection on the Caribbean side for the ICC Under – 19 showpiece event.
Nedd, who participated in the 2018 ICC Under–19 World Cup in New Zealand, is an immensely talented left-arm spinner who performs consistently at the local and regional youth level.
Umrao, who is a product of the Albion Sports Club, has also been quietly coming into his own and should be able to force his way into the West Indies Under – 19 side for the South Africa event once he is able to produce another strong regional under – 19 season, this year.
The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYC) based Anderson is one of the young batters earmarked to go all the way. He is an unassuming little right-hander who is capable of packing a punch and is also quite adapted to working the ball around, especially against the spinners.
The youngest member of the bunch is the left-handed Singh who, like Nedd, has West Indies youth experience. He is an opener by trade and one of the prodigies of the Gavin Nedd youth programme at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC). (Royston Alkins)
